Wandering in Wonderland

So the cemetery bookkeeper is retiring in July. And instead of absorbing that position in order to save money and help balance the parish budget, another individual has been hired. The cemetery has accounts receivable of $94,000 in 2009-2010, and management of this ginormous sum apparently merits a full-time job.

In some alternate reality it is apparently logical for the parish to run a deficit budget, all the while asking parishioners to dig deeper than ever in their pockets to fund the insanity.

Someone needs to tell the administrator about Quicken.

  1. We had the same response, Gretchen. Crying poverty and yet adding new employees to the payroll- are you serious? But at least Barb McLaughlin was properly thanked for her time in the parish. Unlike the lack of respect amd gratitude shown to Eleanor and Alene.

  2. In a recent meeting with the administrator, I was specifically rebuked for writing about the lack of mention of Alene and Eleanor in the bulletin. You can reference that July 25th post "Difficult Decisions" here: http://savingourparish.blogspot.com/2010/07/difficult-decisions.html

    For the record, the administrator told me that he was instructed by his superiors at the diocesan level to not name Alene and Eleanor.

  3. IF the Diocese made this instruction, it would have been in response to what they were told in regards to Alene and Eleanor. One can only imagine...

  4. I will personnally purchase the computer program that is required. I have to think that possibly the 'bookkeeping' necessary to run the cemetary could have been handled by our new receptionist. This is such minor amount as far as receivables that it is unfathonable to me that we need to replace this position. Once again an opportunity to save money; but lets spend, spend spend! Somebody better check maybe there is a lost 'Obama' sign in the tall grass at the parish office!

  5. Of much more concern to me is IS ASP an Equal Opportunity Employer? If so why was this position not advertised? A bulletin announcement of the open position would suffice to meet the law. I hope the administration does not say that because we are a church we are exempt of EOE. All the more reason we ought to be. I believe this is a serious concern and needs attention.

    a)Is our Pastoral Administrator accountable to anyone?

    b)Does he need permission to hire and fire?

    c)Does he have to justify a new hire with the Finance Council?

    d)Are we privy to the salaries that we are being asked to pay?

    B) Need to ask him.
    C) As I understand it, the pastoral and finance councils have no ultimate authority. At this time they are selected, not elected.
    D) No, although the DOR does suggest greater transparency in parish finances.

  9. There is a big difference between the sale of a building and the hiring of a person for a position, like federal law which calls for equal opportunity employment. One of the rules is that the job opening MUST be advertised. We are talking here of a violation of federal law if this job was not advertised. We will probably never know because if the administration discovers this law no doubt someone will find a way to say it was followed even if retroactively.

  10. 8:02 If this is a law, the parish would have to prove that the job was posted. This proof would include the date of the posting. Was it in the bulletin? Nope. Was it in the Leader? I didn't see it. Was it on the Diocesean website? I never checked. Really, could these people be so arrogant to think they are above the law?

  14. Hi everyone,

    First, I deleted the repeated posts and left just the one.

    Second, after talking with someone who worked in an HR department, I have been told that a private company is not subject to government standards for employment--only if they take government money.

    If someone can correct or confirm that, please do.

  15. Exempt from federal law or not one would like to think that a Catholic institution would want to implement its own teachings on equality and justice and fairness toward all. Well, on the other hand, can one really expect such? sad to say no.
