Boston College's Dr. Peter Kreeft recently spoke at Franciscan University in Steubenville. His searing critique of how evil has infiltrated the Catholic Church through 'PHONEYS' is eye-opening. If you possibly can, take the time to listen (it's about 45 minutes). Dr. Kreeft speaks in the persona of Screwtape, the character of a senior devil in C. S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. No one is spared Dr. Kreeft's exposé. Oh yeah, PHONEYS stands for 1) Politicization of the Faith, 2) Happy Talk, 3) Organizationalism, 4) Neo-worship, 5) Egalitarianism, 6) Yuppydom, and 7) Spirituality. H/t to CatholicVote.org.
Good post. These 7 points pretty much sum up what I remember about All Saints Parish. I hope it changes soon.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I would like to point out, however, is that I don’t understand how Kreeft can speak of Muslims as saints. Saints believe that Jesus is the Son of God, God incarnate, and Savior of the world. Without this, Muslims cannot be saints no matter how many sacrifices they make or children they have. Christ is first.

Thanks for commenting, Jennifer. I'm not sure where Mr. Kreeft called Muslims saints. At least he doesn't on the video referenced above...that I can remember.
ReplyDeleteGretchen,
ReplyDeleteIn the 6.Yuppydom section Kreeft mentions that Muslims keep the Law better then Christians do which is why they are multiplying at such a rapid rate.
I think he is basing this on Deuteronomy 30:16: If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you today, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.
What I am saying is that Christians believe that you need the Law and Gospel in order to be considered a saint.

Actually, through the grace of God we have faith in Jesus and through the forgiveness of sins we are made holy which then leads us to keep the Law (although no one keeps it perfectly). This is what makes us saints.

Hmmm...I would question the idea that Muslims are obeying the Law. What Law? The Law of God in the Hebrew Scriptures? The law in the Koran?
ReplyDeleteI like your comment at 7:42 a.m. Through grace we have faith, and through forgiveness we are made holy...a good argument for regular confession.
